Disadvantages of rooting
There are three main disadvantages of rooting and those are, losing our warranty, that is,if we root a device between warranty period and after a few days the device is sent to the manufacturer for servicing,he can charge cost for servicing because the device is rooted. So it is highly recommended that before servicing, bring the device to its initial condition.Another one is security.By rooting,we are withdrawing the restrictions made by the administrator,so many harmful apps can enter without permission.
How to root your device?
Well, frankly there are lot specified ways to root. For example,if you are using Samsung galaxy star then you have to follow some steps and those are different from HTC mobiles.

It is recommended, before root we should have a back up of old ROM
